Divorce and Remarriage in the Church

This is interesting to me because it takes into account the situations of people who are physically and mentally abused in their marriages, but does so based on the Scriptures. Too often we have thought we must make an 'end run' around the words of Jesus in Matthew 19 et al because it simply is the only way to deal with a bad situation. Perhaps we need not make an end run around Scripture after all.www.divorce-remarriage.comSee More

So we have seen at the CWA that your conscience can only be bound to some interpretations of scripture. That seems to be how the debate in congregations and in the public forum is playing out as well. If you are pro-revision, you're alright,…

Prayer request for the Brewer family

Thumbnail
I am asking for your prayers for 5 wonderful children in my church, ages 8-14, whose mother was arrested selling and posession of crack cocaine. She is currently out on bail and has 3 of the youngest children. The oldest 2 were living with their maternal grandmother and doing well until Monday when the mother called the police to have them returned. They refused to return home under the abusive situation by the mother's boyfriend. Then ended up going down to Turbotville to the other…See More

Bishop's Pastoral Letter re: Ministry Policies in the ELCA

Pastoral Letterfrom Bishop Robert DriesenAugust 27, 2009My dear brothers and sisters in Christ:The recent actions regarding ministry policies taken by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America assembled in Minneapolis have resulted in deeply-felt but varied responses. Immediately following the positive vote that now will permit persons in same-sex, life-long, publically accountable relationships to be rostered in this church, a number of voting members could be seen weeping—some for joy after…See More

Whom Shall We Marry?

Thumbnail
When the ELCA finally gets around to changing its official teachings on sexuality, its standards for ordained ministry, its health care provisions, and its liturgies for marriage, pastors who hold to a traditional view of marriage will not have any grounds to refuse to marry other groupings of adults. That framework provides a sort of "conscience exemption" now. But once it is revised, along with state and perhaps national laws, what then? Do those pastors who object to the revision just…See More

But if the leaders of the Church do not exercise the public discernment and oversight they have been called to, then the default position becomes "local option." This moves us to a situation where everyone does what is right in their own…

Technology and Greg's Trepidation

As one who grew up as the internet expanded into private usage, but also one who studied the modern semi-Luddite prophet Neil Postman, I would add this:

if one spends all their time online looking at cat pictures and snarky weird news, then sure, the medium has been of little use.

If however, we use sites like this, youtube, etc... to genuinely share ministry, and communicate methodologies. I see little difference qualitatively from the many newsletters that come through… Continue

Great idea

This is a wonderful site. There are so many wonderful things that can be done on a site like this. It is exciting that we are using advanced technology for our ministries. I feel that technology should not be looked upon as a curse but as another blessing from God.

I can see all this getting out of hand...

MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Ning...who can keep up with it all? We're going to be glued to our PCs 24x7. I understand that one technology/technique eventually surpasses another for many good reasons, but it seems like we are entering territory that Jacques Ellul foresaw decades ago - technology rules us. The pace of change bothers me. I don't like it. Yet here I am. Go figure!

Hopes for this site.

Glad you are here, Greg. Our hope is not primarily to add still another social network to cyberspace but to provide a place online where we can share resources with each other, as well as ideas, best practices, etc. Ning makes it easy for us to do this without having to create something ourselves. We intend to have a link to this network on our new synodical website.
